River Birch (#06)
Native to the eastern United States including Georgia, this tree is one of the few heat-tolerant trees in the Birch family. Native Americans used the boiled sap as a sweetener similar to maple syrup and the inner bark as a survival food. Yellow-bellied sapsuckers peck holes in the bark to feed on the sap.
