Native to China, Korea, Japan, and India, the bark of this tree is a prominent feature as it is smooth, pinkish-gray and mottled, shedding each year. The flowers are white, pink, mauve, purple, or carmine. The tree is a popular nesting shrub for songbirds and wrens.
